The Viewpoint of Socorro is located in the Old Town of Funchal. From here it is possible to spot the port of Funchal, the Barreirinha beach, the Deserted Islands and the coast to Garajau.
Near here you can visit the S. Tiago church, better known as Igreja do Socorro. Its construction is related to a vow made by the locals in 1523 due to an outbreak of plague. In the seventeenth century new and important repairs were carried out. It was completely demolished in 1752, then rise to a new and larger church, whose works were completed in 1768.

Then you will find the path that gives you access to the location here:
N32º 50.028
W16º 54.400
Continue the journey till you find a short downhill (N32º 50.055 / W16º 54.434). Go down this steep path surrounded by cultivated land. Unfortunately the path has parts where you can find water, mud and some dangerous areas. Since it is a route that is done almost entirely on the slope and not having protections, it is not recommended for people suffering from vertigo.
At the end of the path you will find a large rock. This rock broke free and balanced on the edge of the precipitous slope. Since it is something really amazing, the locals built a small shrine in honor of the Lady of the stone underneath the huge rock.
Legend has it that 100 men tried to move this rock in order to avoid it from falling down the beach 300m bellow, but all of them couldn't make it nudge, so a shrine was made in order to honor the forces that hold it in place and to protect those that pass bellow it.
This "monument" was already reason enough to visit, but the site also presents us with excellent views of the North Coast. On the left you can see Porto Moniz very far away, while on the right you can look down and see the old pier of São Jorge.

Canyoning in Madeira - More Photos |
Canyoning (or canyoneering) is traversing a canyon or gorge by combining hiking, climbing, swimming, and/or abseiling. It explores the hard-to-reach areas of a natural landscape by following a water route carved through rock formations. It is a way to see undiscovered and untouched parts of the island.
