Miradouro do Socorro - Madeira Island

MIRADOURO DO SOCORRO
N 32º38.814' / W 016º53.807'

Near here you can visit the S. Tiago church, better known as Igreja do Socorro. Its construction is related to a vow made by the locals in 1523 due to an outbreak of plague. In the seventeenth century new and important repairs were carried out. It was completely demolished in 1752, then rise to a new and larger church, whose works were completed in 1768.

Miradouro Vila Guida

MIRADOURO VILA GUIDA
N 32º38.982' / W 016º53.730'

PT:

Inserted in the garden Vila Guida, the VILA GUIDA viewpoint was built in 1938 and is located on Rua Conde Carvalhal.

It presents an area of 2.000 m2, divided into two levels, the top is a lookout over the bay of Funchal. Although this is a relatively small area, it has a large number of big trees and high landscape value.
The works carried out in 2007 aimed at the renewal of the emblematic image of this area of the city, which over the years had suffered some degradation, maintaining, however, respect for original materials and architecture.

The walls, pergolas and decks were recovered. Some benches have been introduced to allow contemplation of the garden by a desired affluence of the public, the lighting system has been improved and automatic irrigation was installed.

The creation of a mosaic of Adriana Lajinha with an old picture of Funchal, has added more value to this garden.

Capela de Nossa Senhora da Conceição - Madeira Island

CAPELA DE NOSSA SENHORA DA CONCEIÇÃO
N 32º40.575' / W 016º54.038'

PT:

The Chapel of Our Lady of Conception

The chapel of Our Lady of Conception was built in 1935, according to the project of the Architect, Edmundo Tavares and in keeping with the revivalist neo-baroque style, popularized in Portugal by Raúl Lino and that lasted during part of the New State.

The chapel was built upon a previous older chapel which was in ruins. The building was concluded in 1936 and blended harmoniously with the old Quinta da Conceição. In its gardened park there are traditional paving in smooth rounded pebble stones and garden benches decorated with tiles made at the Santana Factory in Lisbon.

In the Chapel building there is a square porch decorated with large religious panels from the same factory. These also decorate the interior and were produced according to drawings by the painter Américo Tavares, brother of the architect, who also did the oil paintings of the retable and of the front. There is also a collection of stained glass windows in the chapel designed by Ricardo Leone.

Senhora da Pedra - Madeira Island

LADY OF THE STONE / SENHORA DA PEDRA - São Jorge, Santana
N 32° 50.110 W 016° 54.419

Our adventure begins in the St. George Lighthouse. It is located on the Ponta de Sao Jorge and its construction dates back to 1959. It consists of a cylindrical ribbed tower of 14m and an annex building. The altitude of its base stands at 271m high. The lamp emits white long lightning with a period of 5 seconds, reaching 15 miles (+-28km).

Use the small square at the end of the road to park your car:
N32º 50.060

Then you will find the path that gives you access to the  location here:
N32º 50.028
W16º 54.400

Continue the journey till you find a short downhill (N32º 50.055 / W16º 54.434). Go down this steep path surrounded by cultivated land. Unfortunately the path has parts where you can find water, mud and some dangerous areas. Since it is a route that is done almost entirely on the slope and not having protections, it is not recommended for people suffering from vertigo.

At the end of the path you will find a large rock. This rock broke free and balanced on the edge of the precipitous slope. Since it is something really amazing, the locals built a small shrine in honor of the Lady of the stone underneath the huge rock.
Legend has it that 100 men tried to move this rock in order to avoid it from falling down the beach 300m bellow, but all of them couldn't make it nudge, so a shrine was made in order to honor the forces that hold it in place and to protect those that pass bellow it.

This "monument" was already reason enough to visit, but the site also presents us with excellent views of the North Coast. On the left you can see Porto Moniz very far away, while on the right you can look down and see the old pier of São Jorge.

Canyoning in Madeira Island

Canyoning in Madeira Island

Canyoning in Madeira - More Photos

Canyoning (or canyoneering) is traversing a canyon or gorge by combining hiking, climbing, swimming, and/or abseiling. It explores the hard-to-reach areas of a natural landscape by following a water route carved through rock formations. It  is a way to see undiscovered and untouched parts of the island.

In navigating paths along streams, pools, and waterfalls, a canyoneer will slide, jump, and descend down through the gorge, often using technical equipment for safety. It can be done primarily for fun and to gain experience, but also for the difficulty of the course and challenges of the terrain.

Canyoning in Madeira - More Photos
There are many levels to canyoning, and it can be enjoyed by all ages. The amount of water and the number of vertical obstacles are factors in determining a canyon´s difficulty. Some of the harder and more technical stages of a canyon, like rappels and jumps, can be modified or avoided altogether to make a specific route more accommodating.

The rush of jumping and diving into beautiful pools of water is incredible.

During summer the northern streams are the most appropriate, as the flows are high. During winter, however, we recommend the streams to the south, with gentler levels and quieter flows.

Currently it is possible to practice this sport in different locations that are properly equipped, such as Ribeiro Frio, Ribeira das Cales, Ribeira da Pedra Branca, Ribeira da Hortelã, Ribeira do Passo or Ribeira do Inferno.
The island hosts the annual RIC Madeira, an International Canyoning Rendezvous that is already a reference in this sport.

If you have the experience and the adequate gear then you will find here a comprehensive list of all canyons in Madeira with information and comments about their current situation:
