Calhau da Lapa - Campanário - Ribeira Brava

CALHAU DA LAPA
N32º39.714 / W017º02.250

There are at least three good reasons to visit Calhau da Lapa:
  • the guarantee that you will find here the cleanest waters of the island
  • the soothing tranquillity of this place!
  • the amazing waterfalls that delight canyoning lovers

Located in Campanário and hidden at the bottom of a steep slope, this beach offers crystal clear waters as a reward for those who decide to follow its difficult paths. We advise you to use comfortable shoes, not sandals, when you start your way down to Calhau da Lapa. Half of the path is paved and the other half is a dirt track. The landscape is dry but the horizon is all blue sea and the prospect of a well-deserved dive encourages you to continue.

Upon arrival, there are some houses and a set of caves excavated in layers of pyroclasts, which are noticeable between basaltic rocks.
A small pier, with many different versions over the years, has resisted the destruction imposed by the force of the sea since 1909. To the west, near the coast is the Campanário islet (Bell Tower islet), which with its peculiar bell-like shape gave name to the parish.
To complete the attractions of this beautiful place, a big 90m waterfall near the mouth of Ribeira da Lapa.

This beach is not paradise on earth, at least not if your idea of paradise depends on luxuries such as sun beds, parasols and a refreshing cocktail in your hand…but if peace of mind and crystal clear waters are on your priority list, then this is the ideal beach for you!

Start by parking your car here: N32º39.873  /  W017º01.799.
Follow the 1km-long dirt track with a vertical drop of 200 meters. The first 600 meters are more or less flat and the last 400 meters are several flights of stairs.
You can also choose to visit the site by boat.
