Ribeira Funda

PT:

EN:
Let's get to know one of the most hidden areas of the island of Madeira: Ribeira Funda.
Ribeira Funda is located in a valley between Seixal and Porto Moniz and only recently (2006) it is possible to reach by car. Before the new accessibilities, the families who lived here had to climb about 800 steps in a dangerous path carved in the cliffs to get home. This path even took some people's lives.
It is not known the date of construction of the staircase, it is only known that it was the inhabitants who placed each step with rocks of the river and cement to have access to the sea.
The cars were then parked in the old ER101 protected by a cave.

In the days when Ribeira Funda was a fertile land for the vineyard production, the village served as an important passage point for those who went from Seixal to Ribeira da Janela. The route was made along the mountain and guaranteed the circulation of several people through the village. The connection between the municipalities of S.Vicente and Porto Moniz was made thanks to the Royal Path. Today the route is impassable in several points but still it is possible to make the section Ribeira Funda - Ribeira da Janela.
To reach the settlements in the south of Madeira, the inhabitants of Ribeira Funda used the Castanheiro trail, which is now used in the Fanal Vertical KM. The construction of the Regional Road 101 took Ribeira Funda off the circulation routes between villages, condemning the population to complete isolation.

In the first quarter of 2018, a hole in Regional Road 101 arose due to the strong erosion caused by the sea. This was one of the ways residents used to leave the village where eight people live. So, at this moment to access the Ribeira Funda with vehicles it is necessary to resort to a road transgression. Residents have to use the emergency exit of the Fajã das Contreiras tunnel on the express way, calling into question the car safety of this route, which runs towards the municipality of Porto Moniz.

A few meters after the emergency exit you will come across Rua António Jeremias de Sousa. Its start is scary with a steep and quite humid  tunnel. After the first tunnel, we pass through a bridge that crosses the Ribeira Funda bed. If you have the opportunity stop the car over the bridge so that you may contemplate the stream that passes underneath. A few meters ahead we reach the end of the road and the village of Ribeira Funda.

It is still possible to walk on the ER101 access however there are huge dangers lurking.
At the entrance to ER 101 (N 32º 49.575, W 017º 07.349), we come across the following warning: "Danger of falling stones. Use under the sole responsibility of users ". It will not be long until you can see the reason for the warning, for the road is full of rocks, tree trunks, and, imagine, a lot of stones dragged by the force of the sea climbing the protective wall.
The most courageous can ignore the wall next to the access tunnel to Ribeira Funda (N 32º 49.887, W 017º 07.952) and walk a few more meters between canes and rocks to the point where the waters of Ribeira Funda join the sea. Here you will see your effort rewarded with a beautiful waterfall:

Ribeira Funda was the beginning of Seixal, because the inhabitants of the parish lived first in this zone and then moved to the center.
There were once at least 100 families and a school with about 50 students but it closed (burned and became inactive).
At Ribeira Funda you will not find grocery stores or bars, but there are still sellers that drive here to sell their bread, fish and fruit.

The population shows some reservations in the contact with those who come from the outside, they have a lot of resistance to everything that is strange and they are little communicative.
The elderly people who live there leave very few times (usually only for medical visits) and don't even like to ride cars. Despite the old age, many continue to look after their agricultural lands.

Agriculture is one of the main activities of the small village, if not the only one. There is plenty of greenery and the grounds are very fertile. Agriculture, especially wine, is very good here. Nevertheless, there are tourist potentialities, namely Local Accommodation.
The houses that are in a preserved state are counted by the fingers. There are about eight that still present conditions, a number lower than those that are left to abandonment and to rot. However, there are business opportunities in Ribeira Funda, with some of these abandoned homes being offered for sale.
As Ribeira Funda is in an Laurissilva protected area, it is not allowed to build more houses.

In addition to hiking and trail running, Canyoning is also one of the most attractive activities in Ribeira Funda. The river that gave its name to the village is often visited by practitioners from all over the world and is often praised for having one of the most beautiful waterfalls on the island,  Poço da Viúva (Widow's Well, 60m).
